Jennifer Love Hewitt é Melinda Gordon, uma jovem que possui a habilidade de falar com espíritos. Eles a procuram para passar mensagens e informações a quem está vivo e, assim, conseguir descansar eternamente.

A série foi inspirada, em parte, no trabalho dos famosos médiuns americanos James Van Praagh e Mary Ann Winkowski, que na vida real se comunicam com fantasmas. Cada episódio costuma mesclar emoção, medo e diversão.

Com sua sensibilidade, Melinda ajuda os espíritos a resolver pendências que ainda os mantêm ligados à vida. Andréa, sua sócia numa loja de antiguidades, é fascinada pelo talento da amiga. Já o marido, Jim, teme que as fortes emoções desse trabalho interferiram na vida deles.

Muitas vezes (pra não dizer sempre), como os recados são confusos e intensos, Melinda encontra muito ceticismo por parte dos vivos, mas consegue que seu talento se sobreponha à desconfiança.

Ela aceita suas habilidades como uma benção e às vezes como uma maldição, mas sempre ajuda seus clientes – vivos ou mortos – a encontrar uma conclusão emocional para suas histórias. Ao libertar os espíritos daquilo que os prende a este mundo, Melinda liberta também os vivos de resíduos fantasmagóricos que são verdadeiros fardos para eles.
